  <td valign="top" background="igrm_notebook_r2_c1.jpg" class="home">Na początku należy uprzedzić że nasze pierwsze plany w pewnej mierze rozminęły się z tym co w końcu zrobiliśmy. A plany mieliśmy naprawdę niesamowite: chcieliśmy stworzyć układ maszyn biologicznych, które umożliwiały badanie oddziaływań białek przy jednoczesnej próbie zmiany sekwencji jednego z nich tak aby znaleźć najsilniejsze możliwe oddziaływanie. Cały układ miał wyglądać mniej więcej następująco. Sekwencja DNA badanego białka lub cała biblioteka takich sekwencji umieszczona na nisko kopijnym plazmidzie miała zostać transformowana do szczepu w którym ta sekwencja ulegałaby stosunkowo częstym mutacjom (nazwijmy ten szczep "jednorękim bandytą"). Jednocześnie plazmid ten umożliwiałby prezentację tychże białek na powierzchni komórek bakteryjnych gdzie istniałaby możliwość selekcji komórek posiadających białko najsilniej oddziałujące z białkiem wprowadzonym do pożywki. Wyobrażaliśmy sobie że taki układ urządzeń pozwoliłby na znajdowanie przeciwciał o nowych właściwościach czy przeszukiwanie w zupełnie nowy sposób bibliotek sekwencji kodujących  różne białka. </td>
