Senders produce signaling molecules, and Receivers are activated only after a particular concentration of this molecule is reached.Although different quorum sensing species have slightly different signaling molecules, these molecules are not completely specific to their hosts and cross-species reactivity is observed.Communication using non-endogenous molecules is less sensitive, and requires a higher signal concentration to take effect.

Harmful radiation such as UV and X-ray are transient and non-traceable. However, their effects accumulate over time. It is therefore necessary to know the level of exposure (strength of ray multiplied with time of exposure). In this year we are constructing a genetic system that measure the radiation level.

This results in slower activation of receivers.

Our system consists of two components. Circuit A senses radiation (via SOS promoter systems) and generates message molecules. The molecules must be stable (non-degradable) and it get accumulated over time. Circuit B senses the level of message molecule, when ordered. We are testing various chemical sensors for the best use of this system.

Aside from the exposure to the sunlight or radioactive compounds, there are so many need for measuring cumulative total value in this world. Our system is quite modular, and it can reform to be a calculator of various other things. Included are the toxic pollutants (bad for health), molecular oxygen (bad for food storage), improper high temperature (bad for food storage), energy consumed (bad for earth), or debt or speeding tickets (bad for our purse).
