The 2008 International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition is about to begin. iGEM is the premiere undergraduate Synthetic Biology competition. Student teams are given a kit of biological parts at the beginning of the summer. Working at their own schools over the summer, they use these parts and new parts of their own design to build biological systems and operate them in living cells. During the weekend of November 8-9, they present their work at the iGEM Competition Jamboree at MIT and have a chance to win awards. They add their new parts to the Registry of Standard Biological Parts for the students in the next year's competition.
The International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition is the premiere Synthetic Biology competition and currently the largest Synthetic Biology conference in the world. Working at their own schools over the summer, participants use standard biological parts to design, build, and operate biological systems in living cells. During the first weekend of November, they share their work at the iGEM Competition Jamboree at MIT and in competition for a variety of awards for excellence. They add their new parts to the Registry of Standard Biological Parts for the students in the next year's competition.
So you want to start a team
The three most important components of each iGEM team are its students, faculty mentors, and a space in which to work. You’ll need all three to successfully start a team. You will also need funding to support the team’s operating expenses

Students
iGEM is primarily an undergraduate competition. While Ph.D students may participate on a team (usually in a mentoring role), the majority of the team should be undergraduate students. We use an inclusive definition of “undergraduate” - basically, if you are not a Ph.D student, then we classify you as an undergraduate. High school students and master’s students fall in this category.

Most iGEM teams have between 6-12 members. IGEM teams are most successful when composed of a multidisciplinary mix of students. Try to recruit biologists, engineers, mathematicians, computer scientists, etc. for your team. Put up posters, solicit departments and clubs with emails, hold information sessions, and generally get the word out about your team. Do interviews with interested students and then accept.

Faculty advisors
Each team is required to have at least two advisors. At least one of the advisors should be a faculty member at the school hosting the team. The advisors provide the team with educational and technical guidance, to help the team acquire the resources it needs to be successful - particularly lab space and funding - and to act as the official contact person with the iGEM organization.

Lab Space
You can’t build biological machines without a lab to work in. Most teams are able to find space with the help of their advisors, often working out of one of their labs. In a few cases, teams have been able to find unused space and furnish it with (often donated) lab equipment. Please contact help@igem.org if you are trying to start your own research space.

Not all iGEM teams will need wetlab space, however. Teams competing in the new Tools Track, which is being introduced in 2008 and is focused on developing any kind of tool - mechanic or computational, physical or virtual - that enables the engineering of biology with standard biological parts, will not necessarily need a wetlab. The goal of the Tools Track is to enable teams without wetlab resources, such as teams of computer scientists or mechanical engineers, to still participate in the competition.

Getting Organized
To get funding, your team will need to be able to describe itself, the funding needed, and the benefits of getting that funding to potential funding sources.

Describe Yourself:
Many teams make promotional literature about themselves to help with recruiting and funding. Consider putting together a brochure explaining the goals & needs of the team.

How much does an iGEM team cost?
The majority of most teams budgets is spent on (in order of decreasing magnitude): summer stipends for students, travel & lodging for the Jamboree, DNA sequencing/synthesis & Lab Supplies, and competition fees. A few teams also earmark a significant amount of funding for purchasing particular lab equipment or doing extreme DNA synthesis, but usually the team advisors' labs have everything needed.

Here is breakdown of expenses for an average iGEM team comprised of 7 students and 3 advisors.
expense
cost / unit
3750

$39200

Additionally, some teams need funds for DNA sequencing, synthesis, and basic lab reagents. Last year the DNA synthesis company GENEART provided 4kb of free synthesis to iGEM teams, and a similar arrangement is in the works for 2008. Nonetheless, some teams budget several thousand dollars for sequencing (for error checking! Important!) and synthesis. Lab reagents & hardware could easily be the most expensive element of a teams budget, but the cost is usually already covered by the operation of the lab hosting the team.

Funding Sources
Many different avenues exist for securing summer stipend funding. Often the hosting school itself provides a mechanism to fund summer research (UROP, etc.). Local and national funding bodies also often have programs to fund individuals students, although it may be more reasonable for the entire team to apply for a larger grant. The other main source of funding for iGEM teams comes from industry. Many companies have sponsored teams or donated equipment in the past and likely will again.
List of Potential funding Agencies
* US: NSF (REU programs)
* EU: EC

Andrew's Advice
[[Image:Andrew_Hessel_Keynote.png|thumb|100px|Andrew Hessel, iGEM 2006 Ambassador and Evangelist]]
*Fundraising starts by crafting a compelling message. Why is iGEM important to your team and why should others support you? There is no shortage of these with iGEM. A few: It promotes collaborative interaction on a near-global scale; the open sharing of biological parts and data; provides a rich, unparalleled educational experience for students; pushes the limits of synthetic biology. Each team is going to bring a slightly different perspective to this.

*Let your team's excitement and commitment be clearly seen. Don't be afraid to show some enthusiasm for participating. It's hard to refuse giving some support to people that are eager and keen and giving up their summer to do something worthwhile.

*Underscore why the supervisors are choosing to be involved and what they are putting into the program. People are more likely to support your team if they see that the leaders are heavily invested.

*More than just participation, project goals that are clearly understandable (even if the technical details are not) will help. This is particulary important for genetic projects. Instead of telling people you're making mutant bacteria, it might be more effective to share an understandable application -- eg. it's towards making a new cancer cure or solving energy shortages. Even if the project is relatively simple, where might it lead in a few years? Today's bacterial thermometer could be tomorrow's natural biosensor for environmental toxins.

*There should be a sense of urgency, that the funds are needed now. How the funds are to be used is important. People like to know where money is going. Is it to pay stipends, buy equipment or reagents, or support travel? Clearly show where there are sponsorship opportunities and for what amounts.

*Utilize a broad range of fundraisign methods. Personally approaching and soliciting prospects, be they individuals or organizations, is by far the most successful. This may be a meeting with your team with a person or group, or by inviting sponsors to attend a formal presentation where the team makes a case for their needs. This may require leveraging personal or professional contacts, talking with other fundraising groups at your school (alumni and business development groups have a lot of experience with this sort of thing), telephone calls, or other legwork.

*Use the media. If your team is being featured in a school newspaper, local newspaper, etc., make a part of the message about how people interested in supporting your team can do so. Do they need to contact a certain person? The department office? Go to a web site?

*Most universities are old hands at raising money. Tap into this experience by visiting the alumni office, or the office of foundations that may reside on campus. These groups usually already have sophisticated fundraising tools and comprehensive donor lists and could be a great help if they become interested in your team.

*Be creative! Very simple things can be very effective at raising money. Runs or other forms of sponsored sport are popular. So are lotteries (although a license is usually needed for these, so check with the alumni office). Or just

*Take the time to thank and recognize people for the suppport they provide to your school or team. Follow up. Send thank you cards that everyone has signed. If donors agree, send them updates on your work.

An excellent example of how to go about fundraising was provided by the Cambridge 2005 team, which produced a brochure, contacted local biotechnology companies, and hosted presentations. They successfully received financial and in-kind support. Also consider speaking with various department heads (iGEM is multidisciplinary) and with companies that might one day benefit from project outputs, eg. energy companies, chemical companies, manufacturing, etc.

Although it has a summer focus, iGEM is a year-round competition. Most teams informally begin in the first few months of the year. Teams spend this time recruiting student participants & faculty advisors, fundraising, and researching the principles of Synthetic Biology and brainstorming project ideas. The first deadline is team registration, which is May 1st. Teams must complete a roster on the iGEM website, submit a brief Team Proposal application, and pay a $1000 (US) team registration fee.

The team registration deadline marks the official beginning of the competition. A copy of all the standard biological parts contained in the Registry of Standard Biological Parts (almost all built during previous iGEMs) is shipped to all the teams. The timing of this roughly coincides with the end of most student's spring semester and the beginning of summer. Most teams now begin full time research and development of their project (although some teams are able to organize an iGEM class or independent study in the previous semester).

Teams spend the summer developing their project and documenting them on the iGEM wiki and the Registry. At the end of the summer, official team rosters and Jamboree fees are due. Note: the iGEM work cycle is not limited a 10-week window in the summer - teams may start working as early as they like and continue working up to the Jamboree deadline

The final deadline for submission of the team's project is in mid-October.
To be eligible for presentation at the Jamboree, the team's project documentation on the iGEM wiki (1), part documentation in the registry (2), and the shipment of physical part DNA to the registry (3) must all be received no later than one week before the Jamboree. The Jamboree usually occurs at the beginning of November, at which teams share their work in the form of posters (4) and a 20 minute presentation (5). Judges award prizes in a variety of categories, including an overall Grand Prize, to teams based on their accomplishments as demonstrated by the five ways the teams share their project (1-5).

After the Jamboree, all the parts received are added to the Registry and presentation materials from all the teams are put online. Many teams submit their projects for publication in academic Journals, while others just relax before beginning again the next year.

Just as IGEM 2007 is wrapping up, iGEM 2008 is starting.
Here at iGEM headquarters, we are still busy with this year's Jamboree, but we have started some mailing lists for next year.

The first list is for anyone who is interested in having a team for iGEM 2008. Please
sign up even if you are not sure you can have a team. You can unsubscribe at any time
you wish. Check back at igem.org/2008 for more information about what is needed to
run a team next year.

The second mailing list is for anyone who would like to receive news about iGEM.

iGEM has been growing so rapidly that we are preparing for 80 to 100 teams this year and a Jamboree with 800 to 1000 participants. iGEM 2007 was a huge success, but we are taking steps to make 2008 even better. Based on the experience of last year's iGEM, we are making the requirements for participating in iGEM 2008 a bit clearer. We hope this will keep the competition both fair and fun.

The requirements listed below are from iGEM 2007. They will be updated when registration opens.

iGEM is intended to be an undergraduate competition in the area of Synthetic Biology based on standard parts. Projects and activities should recognize that perspective.

iGEM 2008 is introducing a new track for software tools. Awards will be given for tools that help engineer biological systems based on standard parts.

Requirements for Participation in iGEM 2008 (DRAFT)
1. iGEM teams consist primarily of undergraduate students at an accredited college or university. The team must be supervised by at least two instructors one of whom must be a faculty member. Graduate students, postdocs, and others are welcome as team advisors. One of the faculty members must be the designated primary contact and is responsible for the official registration of the team, the team roster, and payment of team fees.

2. The instructors are expected to attend one of the Teachers Workshops offered May 3 at MIT or in June in Europe and Asia.

3. All team members are expected to attend the Championship Jamboree at MIT November 8-9, 2008.

4. The team's project must be documented on the iGEM Wiki, the parts used in their project must be documented in the Registry and the physical DNA must be received by the Registry at least one week before the Jamboree. (See the detailed schedule.)

5. Each team will give a 20 minute presentation and present a poster of their project at the Jamboree.

6. The description of each project must clearly attribute work done by the team and distinguish it from work done by others, including the host labs, advisors, and instructors.

7. A $1000.00 USD registration fee is required for each team and a Jamboree attendance fee of $100.00 USD is required for each undergraduate and $250.00 USD for all other attendees.

8. The structure of iGEM teams is quite flexible. Several schools may combine to form a team and a school may have several teams.

9. All participants are required to work hard to build positive contributions to society and have lots of fun.
We're glad you're excited about starting an iGEM team! This section of the site is dedicated to helping you learn how teams work and helping you get started. If you would like to learn more about iGEM in general, check out the What is iGEM page.

Note: iGEM teams must be composed of at least two instructors and a number (usually between 6-12) of "undergraduate" students. One of the keys to a successful iGEM is getting a group of interested students together with interested faculty advisors as early as possible. So if you are a student, one of your first goals should be finding potential advisors. Likewise, if you are an educator, the first step to forming the team is to get the word out with info sessions, posters, publicity, etc.
