Wayne Materi is an Assistant Research Officer in Nano Life Sciences at the National Institute for Nanotechnology (NINT). He has a BSc. in Computing Science from Simon Fraser University (1990) and spent several years as a developer of commercial accounting and business software. He earned his PhD in Molecular Biology and Genetics from the University of Alberta (2004), investigating neural development in the microscopic nematode C. elegans. Since joining NINT in 2004, his work in Synthetic Biology has focused on improving the ability to reliably design and construct novel genetically modified bacteria to perform useful manufacturing and medical functions. Wayne was an advisor to the 2007 University of Alberta Butanerds iGEM team and helped guide them to a First Place finish in the Energy Category.

Edmonton is the capital city of Alberta, which is a province in Canada. It is located along the North Saskatchewan River. It is a city known for many things, including the largest shopping and entertainment center in North America ([http://www.westedmall.com West Edmonton Mall]) and it's many summer festivals. Edmonton is home to the hockey team the [http://www.oilers.nhl.com Edmonton Oilers] and the football team the [http://www.esks.com Edmonton Eskimos]. The [http://www.nint.ca National Institue for Nanotechnology](NINT) is also located on the University of Alberta campus in Edmonton.
